Monchy & Alexandra y Sus Planes Para la Bachata

Mi móvil comenzó timbrar como a las 12:30 de la tarde un domingo, note que tenía una llamada perdida y un mensaje en el correo de voz. Era nada menos que Monchy del dúo bachatero Monchy & Alexandra, ellos estaban en la cuidad de Nueva York. La noche anterior ellos se estaban presentando en el teatro United Palace junto a Andy Andy, Frank Reyes y Yoskar Sarante entre otros en celebración de la independencia Dominicana.

Nos pusimos de acuerdo a reunirnos el próximo día para hacer la entrevista en persona. El lugar era La Casa del Mofongo y a entrar le pregunte a la mesera si Monchy o Alexandra estaba ahí, de una vez los ojos de ella alumbraron y exclamo “¿Ellos vienen pa ‘ca? Voy a preguntar, acabo de llegar.” A poco rato ellos entraron y nos sentaron arriba. Hablamos sobre el concierto (el Bachatazo en el United Palace) su carrera y planes para el futuro.

SG Latina: ¿Como le fue en el concierto en el United Palace junto a todo eso artistas?

Alexandra: Muy bien Gracias a dios, la mayoría de la audiencia era Dominicano por que el concierto celebraba la independencia de la Republica. El tiempo de la presentación fue muy corto por que habían muchos exponentes del género pero tuvimos un buen recibimiento. Teníamos como dos años  que no [nos presentábamos en la cuidad de Nueva York] pero de verdad sentimos que le gusto a la gente.

SG Latina: ¿Encuentran que tener éxito aquí en los Estados Unidos es mas fácil o mas difícil que en la Republica Dominicana?

Monchy: Para nosotros ha sido más fácil tener acogida entre la comunidad Latina aquí en los Estados Unidos. Cuando sacamos nuestro primer disco la recepción de la gente mayormente fue aquí incluso eso [nos abierto la puerta] para que nosotros [pudiéramos] vivir aquí en los Estados Unidos, en Miami. En parte por la gran cantidad de compromisos que tenemos aquí en diferente lugares. Por ejemplo este año, comenzamos esta gira en Enero, y comenzamos en San Diego, [hemos recogido por] Los Ángeles, San Jose, Seattle y Phoenix Arizona. El día antes del concierto de Nueva York estuvimos en Salt Lake City, Utah. La gira continuara en Denver Colorado. Tenemos seguidores en un mercado muy convencional para la Bachata. Mucha veces cuando uno menciona la Bachata uno inmediatamente piensa ‘Nueva York, Republica Dominicana y Boston’ porque ahí están las gran comunidades Dominicana pero en el caso de nosotros es como lo contrario, nosotros tenemos mas seguidores [de diferente países] Mexicanos, Hondureños, Salvadoreños, Colombianos, Puertorriqueños y es por eso que hay gran demandas en otra cuidades. En la Republica Dominicana se no has hecho un poco más difícil pero yo pienso que eso será por que la Republica Dominicana es, como dicen, la mata de la Bachata allá todos son bachateros se hace mas difícil. Aquí lo que mas se conocen son Aventura, Andy Andy, Frank Reyes y Toby Love quizás como este mercado tiene tan poco exponentes se hace mas fácil.

SG Latina:¿Que lo inspira para seguir teniendo éxito en la música?

Alexandra: Es muy bonito tener la oportunidad de hacer lo que te gusta. Particularmente yo y también Monchy desde niño nuestra inclinaciones era por el arte. A mi cantar y a Monchy aparte de cantar le fascina tocar instrumentos yo no estuve la oportunidad de aprender [a tocar] ningún instrumento pero siempre mi sueño fue cantar y cuando me presentaron esa oportunidad pensé ‘wow tengo la oportunidad de tener todo mis sueños en mis manos’ y me dedique a ponerle todo mi empeño y mi mejor cariño [a la música] para que todo me salga bien y que le guste al publico y eso es lo que le pone el toque final. Yo pienso si de verdad le pone la atención y la dedicación a lo que uno hace pienso que la cosa realmente sale bien.

SG Latina:¿Qué ustedes aprendido de hacer música juntos?

Monchy: Hemos aprendido muchas cosas sobre todo pienso que la combinación de la perseverancia y el deseo de hacer las cosas bien y tener en cuenta que el público es el que decide el éxito que uno tenga en su carera. No solamente en la música por que en cualquier carera sea uno un abogado uno tiene que entregarse en su carera para prosperar. También hemos aprendido que no somos moneditas de oro, no podemos gustarle a todo el mundo. Es una carrera muy bonita que tienes su lado duros y oscuros y tiene su lado de brillo. Lo mas duro es cuando tienes que separase de su familia es algo bien, bien difícil. Pero cuando el público te recibe con buen ánimo y entusiasmo, no compensa, pero uno se siente que vale la pena.

SG Latina:¿Que es algo que sus fanáticos se sorprendería aprender sobre ustedes?

Alexandra: A lo mejor los fanáticos piensan que a los artistas en general nos gusta mucho estar en fiesta y en discotecas y no es así. Realmente en mi casa, cuando mi marido pone la música muy alta me comienzo a desesperar. Llega un momento en la vida que cuando estas en la casa quiere estar relajado, sea que a ti te gusta el ambiente de tu trabajo cuando estas en el trabajo pero yo prefiero irme de tiendas y no irme a una discoteca.

SG Latina:¿Si podría tener cualquier otra carrera cuál sería y porqué?

Monchy: Yo pienso que lo mió seria la música quizás no cantante pero detrás de las escenas, como productor o locutor.

Alexandra: Yo creo que yo fuera psicóloga de niños porque era algo que siempre me llamaba la atención aparte de cantar. 

SG Latina:¿Si pudieras colaborar con cualquier artista con cual seria?

Alexandra: Hay muchos artistas que yo admiro. Me encanta la música de Luís Miguel, Laura Pausini, me encanta Milly Quezada que es una estrella Dominicana. Me encanta y admiro muchísimo a Juan Luís Guerra. Hay muchas persona con cual seria muy emociónate hacer un dúo.

Monchy: A mi me gustaría hacer un dueto con una muchacha que es muy conocida, muy famosa, se llama Alexandra. Me gustaría hacer un dueto con ella, talvez algún día.

Alexandra: ¿Si te lo permite ella verdad? Yo creo que vas a tener que pagarle muy bien.

Monchy: La verdad es que nosotros estamos abiertos a todas las posibilidades y con cualquier persona de cualquier género. Hacer una grabación con cualquier artista de cualquier genero.

SG Latina: ¿Como eligen sus canciones?

Alexandra: El proceso de grabación es largo. Nosotros elegimos una gran cantidad de canciones como 50 por ejemplo de esa 50 decidimos cuales serian las mejores para grabar, elegimos las mejores y de esas que quedan elegimos [de nuevo] la que son las de verdad las mejores para incluir en el CD. Es un proceso bien delicado por que tienes que elegir lo mejores para brindar calidad al publico.

SG Latina:¿Qué mas podemos esperar de Monchy & Alexandra?

Monchy: La idea de nosotros es seguir trabajando fuerte y segur conquistando otros mercados que todavía pienso que la bachata hace falta que siga proyectándose mas internacional. Abecés hablamos de internacional pero solamente pensamos en los Estados Unidos pero internacional abarca muchas cosas todavía por ejemplo la bachata no es una realidad en países como México. Eso seria uno de nuestros proyectos que la bachata llegue a mercados así y hacer promociones y cantar allá, que suenen en los radios de allá. Igual que en Suramérica y Centro América, ahora gracias por exponentes como Aventura y El Torito Héctor Acosta la bachata se a dado conocer en países como Honduras. Nosotros queremos seguir esos pasos y llevar nuestra música a países como Chile, Argentina y el mercado asiático. Por ejemplo ahora en Japón y China la música Latina en general esta teniendo un boom increíble. Pero esta teniendo un boom con la salsa. Pero el merengue, la bachata y el Reggeatón se escuchan pero no tienen gran seguidores. Entonces la idea seria hacer promoción para la bachata [en esos lugares] para enseñarles que aparte de la salsa los Latinos también tenemos bachata. Aparte de eso [nuestro futuro incluyera] grabar mas discos y seguir haciendo gira hasta que el cuerpo aguante.

My cell phone rang sometime around 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon; I noticed I had a missed call and a voicemail. The message was from Monchy of bachata duo Monchy & Alexandra, they were still in the city. The previous night they performed at the United Palace theatre alongside bachata artists Andy Andy, Frank Reyes and Yoskar Sarante among others in celebration of Dominican Independence Day.

We agreed on meeting the following day in order to do the interview in person. The location chosen was The Mofongo House and upon entering I asked one of the hostesses if she had seen either Monchy or Alexandra, immediately her eyes widened and she exclaimed, “they’re coming here?! I’ll ask around, I just got in.” Seconds later they arrived. We were seated upstairs. We spoke about the concert, their career and plans or the future.

SG Latina: How it go Saturday night, sharing the stage with so many Bachata artists?

Alexandra: Really well thank God, the majority of the audience was Dominican mainly because the concert celebrated the Republic’s Independence Day. Our actual set time was very short because of the number of artists playing that night. We were very well received. We had about 2 years we hadn’t performed in New York City; we truly felt that the audience enjoyed our set.

SG Latina: Do you find that having success in the U.S. is easier or harder than acquiring success in the Dominican Republic?

Monchy: For us it’s been easier acquiring a fan base within the Latin community in the United States. When we released our first album the majority of the reaction we got was from the audiences here it’s even given us the opportunity to reside here in the U.S., in Miami because of all of the demand in states across the country. For instance, we began our tour this past January and so far we’ve had shows in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle and Phoenix Arizona. The day prior to us arriving in New York we had a show in Salt Lake City, Utah. The tour will go on to Denver, Colorado. We have followers in very unconventional markets for bachata. Many times when you mention the genre bachata you automatically think of places like New York, Dominican Republic and Boston because they have a strong Dominican population but in our case we have fans from countries like Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Columbia which is why we have such a strong demand in the states. In the Dominican Republic it’s been a little difficult; I guess because the Dominican Republic is where bachata originated from. Here the more known artists in our genre are Aventura, Andy Andy, Frank Reyes and Toby Love. I guess because there are fewer well known bachata artists here it’s a little easier to break through.

SG Latina: What inspires you to keep having success in the music industry?

Alexandra: It’s a beautiful thing when you’re able to do what you love for a living. For me and Monchy since we were kids our inclination was towards the arts. For me it’s always been about singing for Monchy aside from singing he’s played instruments. I never had the opportunity to play instruments but when the opportunity came for me to sing I thought, ‘wow here I have my dreams presented to me’ I have to do everything I can in order to realize them. I feel that if you really give your all and your best effort towards what you love you can’t go wrong.

SG Latina: What have you learned from working together?

Monchy: We’ve learned a lot, mainly that a combination of perseverance and desire can go a long way. Also that we need to take into account that the public is the one who decides the success that you will have. Not only in music but in every career, a lawyer must give itself in to his/her career in order to prosper. Also we learned that not everyone is gonna like us. Like any other career music has its ups and downs. The hardest thing about this career is being away from family. But when the public receives you with good spirits and enthusiasm, it doesn’t make up for the fact that you miss your loved ones, but one feels that it is worth the trouble.

SG Latina: What’s one thing fans might be surprised to learn about you guys?

Alexandra: Fans might think that musicians in general like to go out and party all the time which isn’t true. When I’m home and my husband plays the music too loud I start to lose it. I enjoy being around music when I’m working but like with any other job when you’re home it’s different you just want to relax. I rather spend my time shopping in a mall than dancing the night away at some club.

SG Latina: If you could have any other career what would it be and why?

Monchy: For me it’d still be in music maybe not as a singer but behind the scenes as a producer or DJ.

SG Latina: If you could collaborate with any other artist who would it be and why?

Alexandra: There are so many artists I admire. I love Luis Miguel’s music as well as Laura Pausini and Milly Quezada who is a great Dominican artist. I would love to duet with Juan Luis Guerra, I can go on and on.

Monchy: There’s one particular artist I would love to collaborate with, she’s amazing, very famous artist, her name is Alexandra. Maybe some day.

Alexandra: If she allows it right? I think you’ll have to pay her a lot of money in order to get her to do that.

SG Latina: How do you choose your songs?

Alexandra: The song selecting process is a long one. We choose over 50 songs and from those we narrow it down to the very best after we’ve gathered the crème or the crème we record the best ones in order to offer the best quality to our public.                                      

SG Latina: What else could we expect from Monchy & Alexandra?

Monchy: The plan is to keep working hard and hopefully expand our market. We’d like to take bachata to a more international level. Many think that international is restricted to the U.S. but the truth is bachata isn’t a reality in countries like Mexico. That would be one of our projects to take our genre to those types of markets, to promote there, have our music played there and have the opportunity to perform there as well. The same goes for South America and Central America. Now thanks to groups like Aventura, artists like Hector Acosta our genre is being introduced in countries like Chile and Argentina. Right now in countries like Japan and China Latin music is having a boom but the boom consists of only salsa. We want to let them know that Latinos have more music not just salsa. Other than that the plans are to continue touring and recording until we drop.
